Veteran left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj isn't ready to hang up his T20 boots just yet! At 35, he's still fiercely determined to break into the Proteas squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite not being part of the recent series against Australia, Maharaj remains optimistic about his chances.
Head coach Shukri Conrad seems to favour spinners who can contribute with the bat, or offer something unique like leg-spinner Nqaba Peter. However, Maharaj remains hopeful. "Shuks hasn’t closed the door," he stated, emphasizing his desire to showcase his abilities in the upcoming ODI series against Australia in Cairns.
"The T20 World Cup is still a huge one for me. Hopefully, I can get the opportunity to show what I can do," Maharaj said. He acknowledges the coach's plans and is prepared to respect the final decision, but his ambition remains strong.
While George Linde and Senuran Muthusamy filled all-rounder roles in the T20 series, their impact was limited. Maharaj, a key player in the Proteas' runner-up finish at the previous T20 World Cup, acknowledges his batting isn't his strongest suit. Conrad has emphasized the need for a front-line spinner who can also contribute with the bat to balance the team.
The Proteas opted for six specialist batters, relying on Linde, Muthusamy, and Corbin Bosch as all-rounders. However, their combined batting performance in the series was underwhelming, scoring just 12 runs across six innings. Conrad admitted that the team was short a batter, impacting the top order's approach.
Maharaj's Determination
Maharaj's experience and bowling consistency could be valuable assets for the Proteas in the 2026 World Cup. He aims to use the ODI series against Australia as an opportunity to prove his worth and demonstrate his ability to contribute to the team's success.
