According to Cardi, the clash was payback for a 2018 altercation at a Harper’s BAZAAR ICONS party during New York Fashion Week, which also involved Nicki Minaj.

Cardi B shared her version of events during an X Spaces session, describing how she spotted Ali in a private lounge at the airport while en route to a photoshoot for her album cover. Knowing she had to address the past, Cardi initiated the confrontation. "If you thought I was going to let that s*** fly, you out of your f###### mind," she stated, explaining her need to respond to the prior incident where she claims Ali attacked her while being held back by Minaj's security.
Speaker vs. Shoes: Conflicting Accounts
The details of the fight are contested. Cardi claims that after Ali stared her down, she threw a JBL portable speaker at her head. Ali, however, maintains that Cardi threw shoes and bags, not a speaker. Regardless of the specific projectiles used, both accounts confirm a physical altercation took place before security and police intervened.
"So that’s when I threw a JBL speaker on her head,” Cardi said. “And she said, ‘You feel better about yourself?’ She’s acting like she’s gonna fight, but she wasn’t really like aggressive."
