A dangerous heatwave is building across southern Louisiana and Mississippi this week, with New Orleans facing the brunt of the soaring temperatures. Residents are urged to take precautions as heat indices, which measure how hot it actually feels, are expected to climb into the triple digits.
Heat Advisory in Effect
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for a large portion of the region, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Slidell, Laplace, Gulfport, and Pascagoula. The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., but forecasters warn that more advisories are likely throughout the week.
Scorching Temperatures Expected
Monday's heat indices are predicted to range from 105 to 110 degrees. The heat will intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday, with heat indices forecasted to climb even higher, potentially reaching 114 degrees. While temperatures are expected to drop slightly towards the end of the week, the heat will remain dangerous, with heat indices still ranging from 100 to 110 degrees.
Stay Safe in the Heat
Forecasters are urging residents to take the following precautions to stay safe during the heatwave:
- Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.
- Bring pets indoors.
Relief on the Horizon?
There is some hope for relief later in the week, as chances of rain are expected to increase. This rainfall should help to lower temperatures and reduce the risk of excessive heat.
