Packers Bring Back Familiar Face! What This Means for the Defense

The Green Bay Packers have made a move to bolster their cornerback depth, re-signing Corey Ballentine. This announcement, made by General Manager Brian Gutekunst on Monday, brings back a player who has spent considerable time within the Packers organization. In a corresponding move, the Packers released CB Gregory Junior.

Ballentine's History with the Packers

Corey Ballentine is no stranger to Green Bay. He was a part of the Packers' practice squad and active roster from 2022 to 2024, showcasing his versatility and value to the team. During those three seasons, he participated in 37 regular-season games, starting in seven, and also appeared in three postseason contests. His most productive year with the Packers was in 2023, where he achieved career highs in tackles (39), solo tackles (27), and passes defensed (7). He also recorded his first career interception that year.

A Journeyman's Path to Green Bay

Ballentine's NFL journey began when the New York Giants selected him in the sixth round (No. 180 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Washburn University in Kansas. Since then, he has bounced around the league, playing for the Giants (2019-20), New York Jets (2020), and Detroit Lions (2021). He also had stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, and Indianapolis Colts.

Why This Matters for the Packers

The Packers' decision to bring back Ballentine addresses a potential weakness in their cornerback depth. With Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine expected to be the top outside cornerbacks, the team needs additional players at the position to withstand the rigors of a full NFL season. Ballentine's experience and familiarity with the Packers' system make him a valuable asset.

Before re-signing with Green Bay, Ballentine had signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts that included nearly half a million dollars in guarantees. However, he was released by the Colts after just one week of training camp. His return to Green Bay provides him with another opportunity to prove his worth and contribute to a team he knows well.

Looking Ahead

Ballentine will wear No. 35 for the Packers. His primary role is likely to be on special teams, where he has consistently been a key contributor. However, his experience on defense could also prove valuable if injuries or other circumstances require him to step into a larger role. The Packers are hoping Ballentine will bring stability and leadership to a relatively young and inexperienced cornerback group.
