The Boston Celtics' decision to trade Jrue Holiday has been a major talking point this offseason. While Holiday was ultimately shipped to the Portland Trail Blazers, new details have emerged about a potentially more lucrative offer from the Toronto Raptors.
Raptors' Aggressive Pursuit of Holiday
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Toronto Raptors were eager to acquire either Jrue Holiday or Derrick White, dangling the No. 9 overall pick in this year's draft as bait. However, the Celtics reportedly balked at the prospect of taking on RJ Barrett's contract, ultimately opting for the Trail Blazers' offer centered around Anfernee Simons.
What Could Have Been?
Fischer revealed on CLNS’ “The Garden Report” that the Raptors were serious about landing Holiday, viewing him as a key piece to their roster. The Celtics, however, prioritized financial flexibility and a shorter-term contract in Simons. This decision suggests a shift in Boston's strategy, perhaps focusing on a different timeline for contention.
“I don’t think Boston ever really was so interested in that selection for one of those types of guys,” Fischer said. The Raptors would keep their pick, and draft Collin-Murray Boyles.
Holiday's Impact in Boston
Jrue Holiday spent two seasons with the Celtics, averaging 11.8 points and 4.4 assists per game. He played a crucial role in their 2024 championship run, but his performance dipped slightly this past season. This dip, combined with the financial implications, likely contributed to the Celtics' decision to move on.
More Than Just Holiday
Fischer also noted that while teams expressed interest in players like Derrick White and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics were never truly serious about trading them. This indicates that Boston's retooling efforts were more about shedding salary and making strategic adjustments rather than a complete overhaul.
The Celtics' moves this offseason signal a new direction for the franchise. While the departure of key players like Holiday and Porzingis may sting in the short term, the team seems focused on building a sustainable contender for the future. The Celtics majorly overhauled their roster for next season as they’re in a retooling phase. Holiday and Porzingis were sent out while Luke Kornet signed with the Spurs in free agency. Al Horford is also expected to depart.
