Nicholas Hoult is stepping into some big shoes as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman film, set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. But what makes this Lex tick? Hoult himself has been shedding light on the motivations behind Luthor's legendary rivalry with the Man of Steel.
The Envy of a Self-Made God
According to Hoult, Lex Luthor sees himself as a hero, a god-like figure deserving of adoration. He's worked tirelessly to achieve this status, craving the respect and love of humanity. But then Superman arrives, seemingly effortlessly capturing the very adoration Lex believes he deserves.
“I think that's what's fun to dig into with Lex. I think one [reason] being that he's worked to be in some ways this hero, godlike figure, and he believes he deserves this adoration and respect and love from humanity,” Hoult explained on the DC Studios Showcase podcast.
Driven by Love, Fueled by Jealousy
Hoult describes his Lex as “driven by love,” a sentiment that ironically fuels his jealousy and resentment toward Superman. This envy, mixed with fear and other complex emotions, creates a volatile mix that defines their relationship.
Consulting a Luthor Legend: Michael Rosenbaum
Interestingly, Hoult sought advice from a Lex Luthor of the past: Michael Rosenbaum, known for his iconic portrayal of the character on the TV series Smallville. Hoult even appeared on Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, and Rosenbaum has a small voice role in the new movie.
Hoult revealed that Rosenbaum was incredibly supportive, offering encouragement and freedom to embrace the role. He called interacting with Rosenbaum “really special.”
A Rivalry Forged in Animosity and Mutual Respect
The DC Studios Showcase podcast also featured David Corenswet, who plays Superman. Despite playing arch-rivals, Corenswet and Hoult have a surprisingly friendly off-screen relationship. Hoult praised Corenswet’s collaborative nature, while Corenswet described Hoult’s “reckless abandon” for his portrayal of Lex. This mutual admiration, they noted, actually helps fuel their on-screen animosity, promising a compelling rivalry for audiences.
