Gulutzan Returns! Stars Name Familiar Face as Head Coach

The Dallas Stars have announced Glen Gulutzan as their new head coach, marking his second stint with the team. General Manager Jim Nill expressed his excitement, highlighting Gulutzan's extensive NHL experience and ability to innovate and build relationships with players. "We have full confidence that he is the right person to elevate our team to the next level," Nill stated.

Gulutzan, 53, spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers, where he significantly contributed to their power play success. The Oilers led the NHL in power play percentage during his tenure. He also coached the Calgary Flames for two seasons. This marks a return to Dallas for Gulutzan, who previously coached the Stars from 2011 to 2013.

High Expectations for Gulutzan's Second Chance

Gulutzan acknowledges the talent on the Stars' roster and the opportunity to compete for the Stanley Cup. "My family and I are excited to come back to Texas where I started my NHL coaching journey more than a decade ago," Gulutzan said. "Jim and his staff have built a roster that is one of the most talented and deepest in the entire League."

He replaces Pete DeBoer, who was fired after the Stars' recent playoff exit against the Edmonton Oilers. The pressure is on Gulutzan to deliver results, especially with key players like Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene, and Jake Oettinger on the team. His previous record includes a 64-57 record with the Stars and a 146-125 overall record in the regular season, but he is yet to secure a playoff win, holding a 0-4 record.

Challenges Ahead

Gulutzan faces the challenge of stepping into DeBoer's shoes, who achieved a 149-68-29 record in three seasons with the Stars. However, his familiarity with the organization and his recent success with the Oilers' power play offer a foundation for success. Can Gulutzan lead the Stars to the Stanley Cup? Only time will tell.
