Royal Ascot 2025, a prestigious five-day event attracting over 250,000 attendees, has been marred by numerous cases of heat-related illnesses. On the second day, racecourse officials confirmed that dozens of people required medical assistance due to soaring temperatures.
Wednesday saw temperatures reaching a high of 29.7C (85F), drawing more than 41,000 spectators. A spokesperson for Royal Ascot reported that one person was hospitalized, while an additional 42 individuals received on-site treatment. Forecasters had predicted temperatures to reach 30C on Thursday, contributing to the challenging conditions.
Organizers have implemented measures to mitigate the heat's impact. Free water is being provided to all attendees, and additional gazebos and parasols have been installed to offer shade. To ensure the horses' well-being, misting fans and a mobile water bowser with a 1,000-litre (220-gallon) capacity are being utilized.
The UK Health Security Agency issued amber heat health alerts across England, highlighting potential “significant impacts” on health and social care services. This follows an extended period of high temperatures across the UK, with previous yellow heat health alerts already in place.
Royal Ascot, founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, is renowned as both a key social occasion and a prominent sporting event. King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince of Wales participated in a carriage procession on Wednesday. Notably, the Princess of Wales was absent from the event.
Despite the heat-related challenges, the event continues, with attendees encouraged to take precautions against the heat. Remember to stay hydrated, seek shade, and check on those around you.
