North Korea Sending Workers, Deminers to Russia's Kursk Region

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reportedly sending thousands of workers and deminers to the Kursk region of Russia, further solidifying the growing relationship between the two nations. This move follows reports of North Korean troops already engaged in combat alongside Russian forces against Ukraine.

Personnel Deployment

According to Russian state media, the deployment will consist of 1,000 sappers (combat engineers specializing in explosives and fortifications) and 5,000 construction workers. The sappers will focus on demining the Kursk region, while the construction workers will be tasked with restoring infrastructure damaged during the conflict. Sergei Shoigu, the secretary of Moscow's security council, announced the agreement after a recent visit to Pyongyang.

Kursk Region Significance

The Kursk region holds strategic importance and has been the site of reported incursions by Ukrainian forces. Shoigu stated that Ukrainian troops held territory in the region for approximately eight months following a surprise attack in the summer of 2024.

Deepening Ties

This latest development underscores the deepening cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Pyongyang has reportedly provided Russia with significant amounts of conventional weapons and troops to support its war efforts in Ukraine. In return, North Korea has received economic support, cash payouts, and military technology expertise from Russia.

Benefits for North Korea

Analysts suggest that sending workers and military personnel to Russia is a lucrative way for Kim Jong Un to generate income for his regime. Previous estimates indicated that North Korea could receive up to $2,000 per soldier deployed to Ukraine.

Official Statements

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti quoted Shoigu as saying that Moscow and Pyongyang have agreed to erect memorials in both countries in honor of North Korean soldiers who died while fighting in the Kursk region. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency confirmed Kim Jong Un's approval of the cooperation agreement with Russia regarding the situation in Kursk.
