Vice President JD Vance has staunchly defended President Donald Trump's Iran policy, responding to what he described as "crazy stuff" circulating on social media. Vance addressed the issue directly, aiming to clarify Trump's stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions.
"Look, I'm seeing this from the inside, and am admittedly biased towards our president (and my friend), but there's a lot of crazy stuff on social media, so I wanted to address some things directly on the Iran issue," Vance posted on X.
Vance emphasized Trump's consistent position over the past decade: "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon." He stated that Trump has been encouraging his foreign policy team to reach a deal with the Iranians to prevent them from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The president has maintained that Iran cannot have uranium enrichment, stating that this outcome would be achieved in one of two ways: "the easy way or the 'other' way."
Addressing the confusion surrounding "civilian nuclear power" and "uranium enrichment," Vance clarified that these are distinct issues. He argued that Iran could have civilian nuclear power without enrichment, but they rejected that option. He further pointed out that Iran has enriched uranium far beyond the level needed for any civilian purpose and has been found in violation of its non-proliferation obligations by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Vance highlighted the difference between wanting civilian nuclear energy and demanding sophisticated enrichment capacity. Iran's insistence on enrichment, despite violating international agreements, raises concerns about its true intentions regarding nuclear technology.
This defense comes as the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group is reportedly sailing towards the Middle East ahead of schedule, underscoring the heightened tensions in the region.
