CPS Energy Urges Conservation: Stay Cool & Save This Summer!

As summer heats up, CPS Energy is reminding customers about the importance of energy conservation. With air conditioners working overtime and appliances in constant use, summer months are often the most energy-intensive time of year. To help residents stay on top of their energy usage, CPS Energy is bringing back Cam the Chameleon!

Cam the Chameleon: Your Conservation Guide

Cam changes color to reflect the daily conservation level, making it easy for residents to understand what's needed. You can find Cam's updates on the CPS Energy website and social media channels.

Understanding the Color-Coded Conservation System

CPS Energy's system uses four levels: Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. Each level corresponds to specific conservation tips and is directly related to anticipated energy demand.

  • Green Days: Everyday conservation actions are encouraged.
  • Yellow Days: Triggered by rising temperatures and grid strain, Yellow Days emphasize conservation during peak demand hours. Check the CPS Energy website for specific times.
  • Orange & Red Alerts: Issued only if ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) declares grid reliability at risk.

Conservation Tips for Each Level

Green Days:

  • Set your thermostat to 78 degrees.
  • Use ceiling fans in occupied rooms. This can make the room feel 4 to 6 degrees cooler.
  • Close shades and blinds to block sunlight.
  • Unplug electronics when not in use.
  • Line-dry clothes when possible.

Yellow Days:

  • Continue Green Day conservation measures.
  • Check cpsenergy.com/ConserveAndSave & social media for peak demand times.
  • Adjust thermostats further to minimize HVAC use.
  • Avoid using large appliances like ovens, washers, dryers, and dishwashers during peak hours.
  • Charge electric vehicles after 10 pm.

Orange and Red Alerts:

Limit power usage and visit the CPS Energy website and social media for updates if ERCOT declares grid reliability at risk.

By following these simple steps and staying informed through Cam the Chameleon, CPS Energy customers can help keep energy costs down and ensure grid stability throughout the summer.
