Dana White's Pricey Lawn! UFC's $700K Grass Gamble at White House!

UFC's ambitious event at the White House is proving to be a costly endeavor, with CEO Dana White revealing a staggering $700,000 expense just to replace the South Lawn grass after the fights. This comes as the UFC prepares to host a unique card on the White House grounds next June, celebrating America's 250th anniversary.

White, known for preferring indoor arenas, expressed his apprehension about outdoor events. "There is no doubt about it, this is going to be the most challenging event we have ever done," White told Sports Business Journal. "I'm coming off a stadium event, which I don't like stadiums, to the thing that I hate the most in outdoor events." He added, "To replace the grass, because we're going to f*** up the South Lawn, $700,000 just to replace the grass."

The event, originally proposed by President Trump, has undergone several changes, including a shift in date from July 4th weekend to June. The expected attendance has also been adjusted, with White estimating around 5,000 spectators, a far cry from Trump's initial suggestion of 20,000 to 25,000. However, a nearby park will accommodate upwards of 85,000.

Despite the challenges and costs, White seems determined to make UFC White House a memorable spectacle. The promotion has experience with bespoke events, having spent $20 million on Noche UFC at the Sphere in 2024. Early renderings for the White House event showcase a massive arch over the Octagon, highlighting the iconic backdrop.

Why is the grass so expensive?

The specific type of grass used on the South Lawn, coupled with the labor and specialized equipment required for its installation, contributes to the high cost. The UFC aims to restore the lawn to its original pristine condition following the event. This is a task that demands professional expertise.

What other costs are involved?

  • Security
  • Infrastructure (staging, lighting, sound)
  • Personnel
  • Marketing and promotion

While the exact total cost of the UFC White House event remains undisclosed, the $700,000 grass replacement provides a glimpse into the significant investment required to pull off this unprecedented show.
