Delta Flight DL56 Diverted After Severe Turbulence Injures Passengers
A Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam was forced to make an emergency landing in Minneapolis after encountering what the airline described as "significant turbulence." The incident occurred on Wednesday, leaving 25 people aboard the flight requiring hospitalization.
Delta Air Lines Flight 56, an Airbus A330-900 carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew members, landed safely at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) around 7:25 p.m. local time. Medical teams were immediately dispatched to the aircraft upon arrival.
"Twenty-five onboard the flight were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and care," Delta said in a statement. The Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Fire Department and paramedics provided initial medical attention to passengers at the gate before they were transported to nearby hospitals.
Data from Flightradar24 indicates that the flight experienced a rapid ascent and descent approximately 40 minutes after takeoff, suggesting the severity of the turbulence. The plane climbed over 1,000 feet in under 30 seconds, followed by a descent of roughly 1,350 feet in the subsequent 30 seconds. The flight then altered its course towards Minneapolis.
Delta Air Lines has stated that its "Delta Care Team is working directly with customers to support their immediate needs." The airline also expressed gratitude for the swift response of emergency personnel.
