National Guard Deployed in LA Amid Immigration Raid Protests & Union Leader Arrest

Tensions are escalating in Los Angeles as protests erupt following recent immigration raids. The National Guard is being deployed to the city amidst clashes between protesters and law enforcement. This move comes after a week of ICE operations that resulted in numerous arrests and widespread unrest, particularly in predominantly Latino districts.

National Guard Called In

President Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, citing a need to address what the White House describes as “lawlessness.” The decision follows clashes between residents and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, with reports of tear gas and batons being used to disperse crowds.

ICE operations in LA have led to 118 arrests this week, including 44 on Friday alone. California Governor Gavin Newsom has publicly condemned the raids, calling them “cruel.”

Arrest of Union Leader Sparks Further Outrage

Adding fuel to the fire, David Huerta, president of SEIU-USWW and SEIU California, was arrested by ICE. Huerta's arrest has sent shockwaves through California's labor movement. The arrest of a prominent union leader like Huerta is perceived by many as a direct attack on workers' rights and a deliberate attempt to silence dissent.

Tia Orr, executive director of SEIU California, expressed outrage, stating that the arrest has “woke people up across the nation, certainly in California, and people are ready to get to action.” She added, “I haven’t seen that in a long time. I don’t know that I’ve seen something like that before.”

Implications for California's Labor Movement

California's unions, known for their diverse membership and strong ties to civil rights causes, are expected to mobilize in response to Huerta's arrest and the ongoing immigration raids. The arrest is likely to galvanize union members and allies to fight against deportations and advocate for immigrant rights.

  • Protests are expected to continue.
  • Legal challenges to the ICE raids are anticipated.
  • Increased scrutiny of ICE's tactics is likely.
