Flood Watch! Southwest at Risk: Are You Prepared?

YUMA, Arizona - The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for portions of southwest Arizona and California, effective Thursday from noon through the evening. This alert is due to the potential for excessive rainfall across the region.

Areas Under Flood Watch

The flood watch encompasses a wide area, including:

  • Arizona: Central La Paz, Gila River Valley, Kofa, Parker Valley, Southeast Yuma County, and Yuma.
  • California: Chiriaco Summit, Chuckwalla Mountains, Chuckwalla Valley, Imperial County Southeast, Imperial County Southwest, Imperial County West, Imperial Valley, Palo Verde Valley, and Salton Sea.

Residents in these areas should monitor weather updates closely and be prepared to take necessary precautions.

Record Precipitation Precedes Flood Watch

This flood watch follows a period of record precipitation in the desert region. Just last week, Arizona and southeast California saw 1.12 inches of rain, a significant amount for the typically arid area. While isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected through Wednesday, drying conditions are anticipated to return by Friday, with temperatures gradually warming back to normal.

Temperature Drop Expected

As the workweek concludes, a gradual drop in temperatures below triple digits is forecast, offering some relief from the recent heat. However, the primary concern remains the potential for flooding due to excessive rainfall.
