Accra, Ghana - Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), has filed a GH₵10 million defamation lawsuit against controversial media personality Valentina Nana Acyeiwaa, popularly known as Afia Schwarzenegger. The suit was lodged at the Accra High Court, alleging that Schwarzenegger made defamatory statements about Gyamfi in a recent TikTok video.
Details of the Defamation Suit
According to court documents filed by Gyamfi's lawyers at Sustineri Attorneys PRUC, Schwarzenegger's statements in the video falsely portrayed Gyamfi as engaging in improper relationships and financial misconduct. The specific allegations cited in the lawsuit include Schwarzenegger claiming that Gyamfi is “still buying cars for girls in Legon” and that “even his wife's younger sister has bought a house in the US.” The video, originally in Asante Twi, was submitted to the court with an official English translation.
Demands and Relief Sought
Gyamfi's legal team is seeking substantial damages, including GH₵10 million in exemplary damages, general damages, and a permanent injunction to prevent Schwarzenegger from making similar defamatory statements in the future. They are also demanding a retraction and public apology to be published in the Daily Graphic newspaper for three consecutive days and across all platforms where the original video appeared.
Afia Schwar's Response
In a quick rejoinder, Afia Schwarzenegger responded to the lawsuit via another TikTok video, indicating that she does not intend to contest the legal action. She even congratulated Mr. Gyamfi on his “expected victory.”
What's Next?
The court has given Schwarzenegger eight days to formally respond to the writ after receiving the court documents. The outcome of this case is highly anticipated, given the high profile of both parties and the significant amount of damages being sought.
