Accra Sky Train Case: Former GIIF Bosses Seek Bail Variation

Lawyers representing the former Board Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) are requesting a change to their clients' bail conditions. The request focuses on reducing the frequency with which the accused individuals are required to report to case investigators.

Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairman of GIIF, and Solomon Asamoah, the former CEO of GIIF, are currently facing trial at the Criminal Division of the High Court. They are accused of causing a financial loss of $2 million in connection with a proposed sky train project for Accra.

Both individuals have pleaded not guilty to six charges, including conspiracy, willfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentionally dissipating public funds. They were previously granted bail, with a combined sum of GH¢25 million and two justified sureties. The initial bail conditions stipulated that Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi report to the police once a week, while Mr. Asamoah was required to report to investigators every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

During a recent court hearing, the lawyers representing the two former GIIF executives made an oral application to the court, requesting a modification of the bail terms that necessitate their clients' frequent reporting to investigators.

Justice Comfort Tasiame, presiding over the court, instructed the lawyers to formally file a written application outlining the specific reasons for the requested variation. This will allow the Attorney-General's office to provide a formal response. The case has been adjourned until June 24, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC). During the CMC, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, is expected to withdraw certain witness statements related to the case.

The prosecution alleges that Mr. Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi improperly transferred $2 million from GIIF's account to Africa Investor Holdings L.
