ICC Denies Duterte Release Request: War on Drugs Case Continues

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will remain in custody at the International Criminal Court (ICC) after judges rejected a request to release him based on health concerns. The decision was announced on Friday, continuing the legal proceedings surrounding Duterte's alleged involvement in crimes against humanity.

Duterte's War on Drugs Under Scrutiny

Duterte, who is in his eighties, faces charges related to his administration's controversial "war on drugs." The ICC alleges that he was complicit in dozens of extrajudicial killings during his time as mayor of a southern city and later as president of the Philippines.

Defense Arguments Rejected

Judge Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza stated that Duterte's lawyers failed to demonstrate that a previous decision by a lower chamber was unreasonable. The defense team had argued for his release, citing his deteriorating health and claiming it would be cruel to keep him detained during the trial. The former president was not present in court for the ruling.

Future Legal Moves

Duterte's legal team plans to resubmit the release request after a medical examination scheduled for next month. They maintain that Duterte is "infirm and debilitated," and his cognitive abilities have declined to the point where he cannot effectively assist in his defense, according to court documents.

Concerns About Flight Risk and Witness Intimidation

The ICC judges have previously stated that Duterte is likely to refuse to return for trial if released and could potentially use his freedom to intimidate witnesses. Court filings indicate that Duterte allegedly instructed and authorized violent acts, including murder, against suspected criminals.

The case continues to draw international attention, highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding the war on drugs and the accountability of leaders for alleged human rights abuses.
