Region A Sports Tournament Celebrates Young Female Footballers
The City of Joburg Region A Sports and Recreation Department recently hosted its annual U13 Primary Schools Girls Football Tournament. This sixth edition, held at Rabie Ridge Stadium, wasn't just about competition; it was a celebration of National Women's Day and a commitment to empowering young girls through sports, health, and dignity.
Mandla Mahlangu, Region A’s sports and recreation assistant director, emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for young girls: "These tournaments are vital... The girl child must be protected, acknowledged, and given these opportunities."
Around 24 schools participated, battling it out in group stages for a chance to reach the knockout rounds. Defending champions Bonwelang faced tough competition, while other schools showcased their skills and teamwork. The focus remained on creating a positive and healthy environment for the young athletes.

She has worked with the Proteas Women’s cricket team, Softball South Africa, and Team South Africa at the Olympics. Despite facing challenges as a black woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, Dr. Tsebe draws strength from her understanding of history and politics, enabling her to overcome doubts and continue to excel.
