Mandela Day: Cape Town Cleans Up & Gives Back! 🇿🇦

Mandela Day is more than just a public holiday; it's a call to action, a reminder that each of us can contribute to a better world. This year, Capetonians are answering that call in various meaningful ways.

Cleaning Up Our Coastlines

The Two Oceans Aquarium is urging residents to participate in a cleanup initiative at Sunset Beach. Recent storms have washed significant amounts of litter and plastic into the ocean, posing a threat to marine life. As Hellen Lockhart, Conservation and Sustainability Manager at the Aquarium, explains, winter rains exacerbate the problem, carrying waste from rivers and canals into the sea. Volunteers are needed to help remove this debris and protect our precious marine ecosystems.

67 Minutes, 67 Kennels of Love

Capegate Shopping Centre is partnering with The Dogbox Project for another heartwarming Mandela Day initiative. This year, they aim to build and donate 67 kennels to under-resourced animal shelters in just 67 minutes! Families, schools, and businesses are invited to participate in painting these kennels, providing much-needed shelter and warmth for rescue dogs.

Zoë Enslin, Capegate Shopping Centre’s Marketing Manager, highlights the significance of Mandela Day, emphasizing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. The Dogbox Project, originally launched as a Mandela Day initiative, now supports shelters year-round.

Generous Donations for Furry Friends

Pet Shop Science has generously donated 67 blankets, 67 dog jerseys, and 67 bags of food, valued at R22,000, to further support the initiative. This contribution will significantly improve the lives of dogs in need, providing them with comfort and nourishment.

Mandela Day is a powerful reminder that we all have the ability to make a positive impact. Whether it's cleaning up our beaches or building shelters for animals, every act of kindness contributes to a more compassionate and sustainable South Africa.
