Heartbreak for England U19 as Spain snatched a late victory, crushing their hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Women's U19 European Championship. A dramatic 95th-minute goal from captain Cristina Librán secured Spain's passage to the next round, leaving the Young Lionesses devastated.
Lauren Smith's side needed a win to progress, but their performance fell short against a determined Spanish team. Despite a valiant effort, England suffered a 1-0 defeat, ending their campaign prematurely.
The loss to Spain followed a previous defeat to Portugal, leaving England with only one win – a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands – in the group stage. This was not enough to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Six young Arsenal players were part of the England squad competing in the tournament, with the aim to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Katie Reid and Laila Harbert played every minute of the three group stage games, highlighting their importance to the team. Vivienne Lia also featured prominently, starting all three matches. Jessie Gale, Madison Earl and Cecily Wellesley-Smith also featured, but were unable to prevent England's exit.
U20 World Cup Qualification Still Possible
Despite the disappointment in the U19 Euros, the Young Lionesses have already qualified for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup by finishing third in Group B of the U19 Euros. They will now prepare for that tournament, aiming to make a stronger showing on the global stage.
Spain and Portugal will now progress to the semi-finals to face France and Italy.
