Football Sisters Unite for Singapore-Hong Kong Friendly in SA

The beautiful game brings people together, and for sisters Nurhidayu and Natasha Naszri, it's a chance to shine for Singapore against Hong Kong. These talented footballers are set to represent their nation in an international friendly match, marking a special reunion on the pitch.

The last time Nurhidayu and Natasha shared a competitive field was on December 5, 2024, during the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Cup. The Lionesses secured a 1-0 victory against Timor-Leste, earning them a qualifying spot for the 2025 Asean Women’s Championship - a historic moment for Singaporean women's football. Although they later withdrew, the qualification holds a special place in their hearts.

“We really sacrificed a lot and put in a lot of effort to play for that competition. So having to really win it (third place), and achieve something, was a really happy moment for us,” expressed Nurhidayu, highlighting the dedication and passion that fueled their success.

Singapore vs. Hong Kong: A Family Affair

On June 15th, the sisters are looking forward to creating new memories as the Lionesses face Hong Kong, ranked 80th in the world, in an international friendly at Choa Chu Kang Stadium. This match marks Singapore's (ranked 139th) first official international home game of 2025.

Both Nurhidayu and Natasha have been selected by national women’s team head coach Karim Bencherifa, solidifying their roles as key players within the 23-member squad.

Overcoming Distance and Strengthening Bonds

The sisters, despite being close, have experienced periods of separation. Natasha, a central midfielder, has been training at Spain's LaLiga academy as part of the Unleash the Roar! (UTR) overseas scholarship programme. Meanwhile, Nurhidayu, a left-back, trains with the Lion City Sailors women’s team and Temasek Polytechnic.

“We have known each other our whole life, so we understand each other. If I have a problem, I go to her; if she has a problem, she goes to me. This stuff helps us to develop as a player as well,” Nurhidayu said, emphasizing the strong bond they share and how it positively influences their growth as athletes.

Inspiring the Next Generation of SA Footballers?

The story of Nurhidayu and Natasha is not just about football; it's about family, dedication, and the pursuit of dreams. Their journey is a powerful inspiration to aspiring footballers in South Africa and around the world. Their commitment shows that with hard work and determination, anything is possible on the pitch.
