Phoenix Braces for More Storms! Flood Watch Issued! Is Your Area Affected?

Phoenix residents, get ready! After a brief respite from the extreme heat, the monsoon season has returned with a vengeance. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area, including Anthem, Sun City, and Peoria.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning in Effect

The warning, initially in effect until 10:15 PM MST, highlights the potential for heavy rainfall in a short period due to the storm's slow movement of only 5 miles per hour. This could lead to localized flooding in affected areas.

This follows scattered showers earlier in the week that impacted Scottsdale and Surprise, causing wet roads and even a spinout on the freeway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and reduce speed, especially during periods of heavy rain.

What to Expect

  • Heavy Rainfall: Expect significant rainfall in a short amount of time, potentially leading to flash flooding.
  • Strong Winds: The National Weather Service warned of winds as strong as 60 mph.
  • Large Hail: Officials warned of hail as large as 0.75 of an inch. Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
  • Lightning: Continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.

Increased Rain Chances Through Friday

The chance of showers remains at 30% through tonight and early Friday morning. However, the probability of rain increases significantly as we approach Friday afternoon and evening, reaching approximately 50%.

While most areas are expected to receive some rainfall, the exact amount remains uncertain. Some models predict relatively dry conditions with less than 1/10 of an inch of rain, while others anticipate up to 1/3 of an inch or more.

Saturday Forecast: Drier Conditions Ahead

The window for rain will close quickly on Saturday as a trough of low pressure pushes into the state, effectively removing moisture to the east. Residents should stay updated with the latest forecasts and heed any warnings issued by local authorities.

Safety Tips During a Thunderstorm

The National Weather Service warns: "For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning."
