The iconic Alien franchise is taking a bold leap: landing on Earth! FX's new series, Alien: Earth, from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, promises a fresh perspective on the terrifying saga. This marks the first time the Alien universe directly confronts our home planet.
What to Expect from Alien: Earth
Hawley describes the series as exploring humanity's precarious position between its primal past and a potentially deadly AI future. He poses the question: Does humanity deserve to survive its own arrogance, both in denying its place in the food chain and in creating AI that may ultimately turn against us?
Set in 2120, two years before the events of the original Alien film (which takes place in 2122), Alien: Earth acts as a prequel. The series introduces a near-future Earth dominated by five powerful corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. These corporations are locked in a race for immortality, pursuing it through cybernetics, cloning, and consciousness uploading, as revealed in the opening transmission of Episode 1.
How Alien: Earth Fits into the Timeline
While Alien: Romulus, the seventh film in the franchise, is set in 2142 (between Alien and Aliens), Alien: Earth rewinds the clock. This prequel setting allows the series to explore the origins of the corporate power struggles and the early encounters with the terrifying Xenomorphs. The series premiere is August 12th at 8 p.m. ET on FX, with new episodes every Tuesday through September 23rd. Streaming will be available on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
