Dune 3: SHOCKING Film Choice! Will It Save or Ruin the Sci-Fi Epic?

Denis Villeneuve is making a bold move with 'Dune: Part Three'! In a surprising shift, the highly anticipated sequel will be shot on film, including 15-perf 65mm (IMAX) and 5-perf 65mm formats, a first for the franchise. This marks a significant departure from 'Dune' and 'Dune: Part Two', both of which were filmed digitally.

Kodak revealed the news, highlighting the influence of DP Linus Sandgren, a staunch advocate for film over digital. Sandgren, known for his work on 'La La Land' and 'No Time to Die,' believes film provides a unique 'magic and emotion' that digital can't replicate.

Why the Switch to Film?

Villeneuve's decision aligns with a growing trend of big-budget productions returning to film. Directors like Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, and Greta Gerwig have embraced 65mm formats, achieving stunning results. The move suggests Villeneuve is aiming for a more organic aesthetic to conclude his sci-fi trilogy.

What About the Story?

While the visual approach is evolving, the storyline remains a topic of speculation. 'Dune: Part Three' is expected to draw inspiration from Frank Herbert's 'Dune Messiah,' a controversial novel exploring the aftermath of Paul Atreides' rise to power. Some theories suggest the film might incorporate elements from 'Children of Dune,' another sequel, to expand the narrative scope.

The adaptation of 'Dune Messiah' presents a challenge due to its introspective nature. Incorporating 'Children of Dune' could provide a more epic scale, focusing on Paul's children and their efforts to restore the Imperium. It remains to be seen how Villeneuve will balance these elements.

Release Date and Production

Principal photography began in July 2025 in Budapest. 'Dune: Part Three' is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Will the return to film enhance the visual experience and capture the essence of Herbert's complex world? Only time will tell!
