Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber has been elected to the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, a testament to his outstanding collegiate career with the Hoosiers. The news, delivered via text message from IU Associate Athletic Director Jeremy Gray, initially left Schwarber "kind of shocked."
Schwarber, who played for IU from 2012-2014, helped lead the team to its first College World Series appearance in 2013. His pivotal home run against Florida State in the Super Regional that year is still remembered as a defining moment for the program. He was subsequently drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, launching a successful MLB career.
However, there's a twist. While Schwarber was selected for induction this year, he will defer the honor to a future date. An IU Athletics Hall of Fame rule requires all living inductees to attend the ceremonies. With the MLB season in full swing, Schwarber is unable to be present for the September 5th induction ceremony.
"It wasn't even on the radar," Schwarber said. "Once they tell you, you get the chills. You start thinking back to everything throughout the three years, what we did there, the team that we had, just how special it was."
The 2025 Hall of Fame class also includes former IU basketball standout Cody Zeller, among others. While Schwarber won't be inducted alongside them this year, his eventual inclusion solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest baseball players in IU history. He will be officially welcomed to the Hall of Fame in a future year when his schedule permits.
IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson stated, "Indiana University has a rich history of success in a wide variety of sports, which is highlighted in this year's Hall of Fame class... We are excited to welcome these six individuals to the Hall of Fame and congratulate them and their families on this well-deserved honor."
Schwarber's deferral highlights the challenges faced by professional athletes balancing their commitments with honors recognizing their past achievements. While the ceremony will have to wait, the honor itself is a permanent recognition of his impact on IU baseball.
