LUBBOCK, Texas - Get ready for a wild weather ride! Early morning thunderstorms are sweeping across the Texas Panhandle and heading towards the South Plains. Expect gusty winds, hail, and heavy rainfall in some areas. Stay safe if you're out late tonight or early Sunday morning, as isolated flooding is possible where storms linger. Keep an eye on the radar!
Tonight's Stormy Outlook
As the sun sets, storms are expected to roll in from the Panhandle, mainly affecting areas north and east of Lubbock. Be prepared for gusty winds, lightning, and heavy bursts of rain. You might hear rumbles of thunder late tonight.
The best chances for severe wind gusts and heavy rain will be mainly to the north of a line from Friona to Guthrie. Lows tonight will be in the upper 60s to low 70s and very humid.
Sunday's Weather: Muggy Start, More Storms Later
Sunday will likely start off gray and muggy, especially if storms passed through your area overnight. Temperatures will hover around the 70s to low 80s during the early hours. By late afternoon, the sun will break through in spots and that combination of heat and leftover moisture will help fire up new storms, especially east of the Caprock.
Targeted Areas for Sunday Afternoon Storms
- Crosbyton
- Paducah
- Matador
If you live in these areas, be prepared for pop-up storms likely between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. These may bring brief heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning. Otherwise it will be warm and sticky with highs in the low to mid 90s.
Heatwave on the Horizon!
Next week, the heat turns up in a big way. By Wednesday, most of the area will face triple-digit temperatures. Stay hydrated and take precautions to avoid heatstroke!
