JO1's Ruki Shiroiwa Lands Lead Role in Anime Film 'AS ONE'
Ruki Shiroiwa, a member of the global boy group JO1, is making his voice acting debut in the upcoming animated feature film 'AS ONE'. The film, scheduled for release on August 22nd, features Shiroiwa as the voice of the main character, Yo, a high school student aspiring to be a musician but struggling with his future.
Adding another feather to his cap, Shiroiwa also self-produced and performs the film's theme song, 'Meguriboshi' (Wandering Star). This marks his first venture into creating a theme song for a movie.
From 'PRODUCE 101 JAPAN' to Anime Stardom
Shiroiwa's journey to this role began with his participation in 'PRODUCE 101 JAPAN,' a survival audition program. He has since expanded his career, starring in the movie 'If the Night Ends, I'll Meet You First' and hosting the radio program 'JO1's All Night Nippon X'.
The production team was inspired to cast Shiroiwa after hearing his original song 'Himawari,' which he wrote and composed as part of JO1's self-produce project 'PLANJ.' They felt the song perfectly captured the essence of the character Yo.
'AS ONE': A Sci-Fi Anime from Acclaimed Creators
'AS ONE' is directed by Kobun Shizuno, known for his work on the 'Detective Conan' film series. Character designs are by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto ('Neon Genesis Evangelion,' 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time'), and mechanical designs are by Ippei Gyoubu ('Gundam Reconguista in G').
The film is based on the arcade game 'Starwing Paradox' but features a completely original story and newly designed characters. Shiroiwa is joined by Haruka Shiraishi, who voices Rako, a girl living on the wandering star Meguriboshi.
Shiroiwa expressed his surprise and excitement upon receiving the offer, stating that he approached the voice recording sessions with a determination to do his best, despite his lack of experience.
