New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is drawing inspiration from a legendary figure in his coaching approach: Bill Parcells. Glenn, who proudly identifies as a "Bill Parcells Guy," emphasizes the importance of toughness, fundamentals, and a competitive spirit in shaping the Jets' training camp.
Glenn's Parcells Connection: A Legacy of Coaching
Glenn fondly recalls being coached by Parcells and continues to value his guidance. "It don’t take long to become one of his guys," Glenn stated, highlighting the traits Parcells seeks in players – both on and off the field. Glenn appreciates Parcells' continued mentorship, stating, "He still coaches me to this day. But I appreciate that, I really do. I have no ego as far as being criticized by that man. When he calls, I answer. And I’m here to listen to what he says."
Building a Competitive Team: Back to Basics
Glenn's focus on fundamentals is evident in the Jets' training camp practices. He emphasizes the importance of a highly competitive environment, stating, "All four days have been competitive... The nature of what we need to be is a highly competitive team. Our guys look forward to that, and they know that's the expectation anyway. If you can't live up to that, it's going to be hard to be part of what we're trying to build."
1-on-1 Tackling Drill: Honing Essential Skills
A key element of Glenn's training regimen is the 1-on-1 tackling drill, designed to reinforce fundamental tackling techniques. "We did it in OTAs, and it's something I believe in," Glenn explained. "It's really just a precursor to what's going to happen when we get to tackling, because we are going to tackle. And the guys are ready for it. As you see, they were energized. They know what's coming. It's fun, but you're also getting a chance to teach. You're getting a chance to work on things that you have to work on. This league is about making open-field tackles. And I think we all know it. It's a spacious league right now. So, the more you can make tackles in space, the better we are going to be as a team."
Glenn traces the origins of the drill back to his time in Detroit, modifying it to fit his style while maintaining the core teaching principles. He believes the drill not only excites the players but also provides valuable opportunities for instruction and skill development. With a strong emphasis on competition and fundamental techniques, Glenn aims to build a resilient and successful team in New York.
