Houston Weather Alert! Flash Flood Warning: Stay Safe This Weekend!

Houston Braces for Weekend Storms and Potential Flooding

Houston residents should prepare for a wet and potentially dangerous weekend as scattered storms and heavy downpours are forecast for the region. The remnants of a tropical system are bringing significant moisture into the area, increasing the risk of localized street flooding.

FOX 26 meteorologist Allison Gargaro warns of "on and off showers this weekend with the potential for a few storms." Rainfall amounts could reach 1-2 inches in some areas, leading to hazardous conditions.

High-Water Locations and Flood Safety

Remember, even a small amount of standing water can be dangerous. According to Houston TranStar, just six inches of water can cause a loss of control or stalling, and two feet of water can carry away a vehicle. If you encounter high-water spots, heed the warning: "Turn around, don't drown." Abandon your vehicle and move to higher ground if floodwaters rise around your car.

Here are key resources to monitor water levels and traffic conditions:

  • Houston TranStar: For updated high-water spot locations.
  • Harris County Flood Control: Check bayou and creek levels.
  • National Weather Service: Tracks water levels multiple times daily.

Looking Ahead: Drying Out Next Week, But Heat Returns

The wet pattern is expected to give way to drier conditions by Monday as high pressure rebuilds. Sunnier skies will return, and rain chances will diminish. However, this will also bring a significant rise in temperatures. Highs are expected to climb into the upper 90s, with humidity pushing the heat index up to 105.

Tropics Are Quiet, But Preparedness is Key

While the area of low pressure in the Gulf has moved inland, the National Hurricane Center is not currently monitoring any active systems. However, it's always a good time to stock your hurricane preparedness kit.
