UFC Debut: 'Buchecha' Claims Pressure is on His Opponent!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Marcus 'Buchecha' Almeida is set to make his highly anticipated UFC debut at UFC Abu Dhabi. Despite the hype surrounding his arrival, 'Buchecha' believes the pressure is squarely on his opponent, Martin Buday. Buday, with a solid 6-1 record in the UFC since 2022 and no submission losses in 17 professional fights, is expected to provide a stern test for the newcomer.

'Buchecha' Downplays the Pressure

“I’m anxious to feel all that, but I’m not feeling pressured,” Buchecha told MMA Fighting. He argues that his extensive Jiu-Jitsu background, including a record 13 IBJJF world championships as a black belt and multiple ADCC gold medals, doesn't automatically make him the favorite in MMA. He feels the pressure would be on him if it were a gi match, but in MMA, he feels new and hungry.

A Grappling Legend's Transition to MMA

Buchecha transitioned to MMA in 2021 and boasts a 5-1 record, with all wins secured via first-round finishes. His grappling pedigree is undeniable, having dominated the competition circuit for years. He even holds a dominant 5-3 record over fellow UFC fighter and grappling star Rodolfo Vieira, showcasing his prowess against top-tier competition.

Eyes on UFC Abu Dhabi and Beyond

After a forced layoff that had him contemplating retirement, Buchecha is eager to make up for lost time. While focused on his upcoming fight on July 26th, he also has aspirations of competing at UFC Rio de Janeiro on October 11th, though he acknowledges it might be too soon. He is taking things “one step at a time.”

The UFC's return to Abu Dhabi also features Robert Whittaker facing Reinier de Ridder in a middleweight main event. As 'Buchecha' steps into the Octagon, fight fans are eager to see if his grappling dominance translates to success in the UFC's heavyweight division.
