Chicago is facing a double whammy today: scorching heat and severe thunderstorms. A heat advisory is in effect with the heat index expected to reach a dangerous 100-105 degrees Fahrenheit. But that's not all – the threat of severe storms is looming large, impacting travel and daily life.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings & Watches
Several counties are under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, including Central Cook County (until 3:30 p.m.) and DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, and LaSalle counties (until 3 p.m.). DuPage and Will Counties are also under a warning until 3 p.m.
A broader Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until 9 p.m. for Kane, DuPage, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, Lake (IN), Porter, LaPorte, Newton, and Jasper counties. This means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop in these areas.
O'Hare Airport Ground Stop
The severe weather has already caused significant disruptions at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport. A ground stop is currently in place, preventing planes bound for Chicago from taking off. Aircraft are being held at their originating airports to ensure passenger safety.
What to Expect
The storms are expected to bring strong wind gusts, potentially reaching up to 70 mph in some areas. Heavy rain is also anticipated, raising the risk of flash flooding. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your property.
Looking Ahead
While Friday will bring some relief with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-80s, the chance of rain and storms remains. The potential for more storms extends into Saturday. Highs this weekend will climb again, with Saturday in the upper 80s and Sunday around 90 degrees. Monday through Wednesday will bring sunshine and highs in the mid-90s on Monday.
Stay Safe!
- Monitor local weather reports and alerts.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
- Seek shelter indoors if a storm approaches.
