West Nile Virus Alert! Are YOU at Risk? Symptoms & Prevention Tips

Across the United States, health officials are issuing warnings about the West Nile virus. In California, Kern County has reported its first human case of the year, while in South Dakota, the Department of Health is predicting a significant outbreak, potentially the worst since 2018.

West Nile Virus: What You Need to Know

According to Dr. Shikha Mishra, an infectious disease specialist with Kern Medical, a staggering 80% of people infected with West Nile virus may not even know they have it. These individuals remain asymptomatic, showing no signs of illness.

Symptoms to Watch For

While most cases are asymptomatic, about 20% of infected individuals may experience symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Joint pains
  • Typical viral symptoms

In rare, but serious cases (less than 1%), the virus can affect the brain, leading to potentially fatal outcomes or requiring long-term treatment. These severe cases can result in paralysis, memory deficits, and other neurological complications.

South Dakota Braces for Outbreak

The South Dakota Department of Health predicts a surge in West Nile virus cases, projecting 137 cases in 2025. The first human case in South Dakota has already been confirmed in a Brookings County resident. The virus has also been detected in mosquito pools across several counties.

Prevention is Key

Health officials emphasize the importance of prevention to avoid contracting West Nile virus. Recommended measures include:

  • Using mosquito repellent
  • Limiting time spent outdoors from dusk to midnight
  • Removing standing water in outdoor areas
