The Fire Island Inlet Bridge, a vital link connecting Jones Beach Island and Robert Moses State Park, has reopened to traffic after an emergency inspection prompted its temporary closure. The reopening comes as a relief to beachgoers and local residents who rely on the bridge for access to these popular Long Island destinations.
Emergency Inspection Shuts Down Bridge
The bridge was initially closed to vehicular traffic late Sunday following reports of a falling object. While the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the object, a park official revealed that a fishing boat captain reported seeing concrete falling from the bridge around 9 p.m. Sunday.
The incident sparked immediate concern, leading to an overnight inspection by state transportation officials. A second inspection was conducted Monday morning before the bridge was deemed safe to reopen around 12:40 p.m.
Bridge Deemed Safe, But Monitoring Continues
DOT spokesperson Stephen Canzoneri stated that the bridge is now "structurally sound and safe for travel" after the two inspections. However, authorities are not taking any chances. Another inspection was scheduled for Monday evening, with potential lane closures to facilitate any necessary maintenance.
From 10 p.m. Monday through noon on Tuesday, the bridge will be reduced to one lane with alternating traffic flow. The U.S. Coast Guard is also working to limit marine traffic to the south side of the inlet until the completion of the evening inspection.
Precautions and Ongoing Monitoring
While the immediate threat appears to have been addressed, the incident highlights the importance of regular bridge maintenance and inspection. The DOT is working closely with various agencies, including the New York State Police, New York State Park Police, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, to ensure the safety of the Fire Island Inlet Bridge and its users.
The swift response and ongoing monitoring demonstrate a commitment to maintaining the structural integrity of this critical transportation link and ensuring the safety of the public.
