Thailand's Khao Kheow Open Zoo was the place to be on Thursday as thousands flocked to celebrate the first birthday of Moo Deng, the internet sensation pygmy hippo. This adorable hippo, whose name means "bouncing pig" in Thai, has captured hearts worldwide with her rosy cheeks and charming antics.
A Four-Day Hippo-sized Party
Moo Deng's birthday celebration is a four-day extravaganza, complete with a photo exhibition, a charity auction, and even a parade. Visitors from around the globe, including dedicated fans like Molly Swindall from New York and flight attendant Thea Chavez from Houston, made the journey to witness the momentous occasion.
Hippo-Sized Treats
The birthday hippo and her mother, Jona, enjoyed a 44-pound "cake" made entirely of tropical fruits carved in traditional Thai style. Moo Deng, blissfully unaware of her celebrity status, spent her special day napping, munching on watermelon and vegetables, and enjoying a shower.
Charity and Conservation
The celebration wasn't just about fun and games. A charity auction was held, featuring some of Moo Deng's prized possessions. Her plastic bathtub sold for $2,150, while a cast of her footprints fetched a staggering $21,426. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to a wildlife conservation fund.
"Moo Deng has made more people know about the zoo, generating so much income for us – which allows us to improve the zoo a lot,” said Atthapon Nundee, Moo Deng’s caretaker.
Moo Deng's fame has brought joy to many and is contributing to wildlife conservation efforts. It's safe to say that this little hippo is making a big impact on the world!
