Boston Braces for Flooding! Is Your Commute in Danger?

Boston Area Under Flood Watch: What You Need to Know

The Boston area is bracing for heavy rainfall and potential flooding as a NEXT Weather Alert Day has been declared for Thursday. The WBZ Weather Team is warning residents that torrential rain could lead to localized flooding, particularly in areas near and south of the Mass Pike.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to arrive just before dawn and continue through midday. Rainfall totals could reach or exceed 2 inches in a short period, potentially causing slow and hazardous travel during the morning commute. Drivers should exercise extreme caution.

Rhode Island Also Under Alert

Meanwhile, Rhode Island is facing a double whammy of severe weather. A heat advisory is in effect for northern Rhode Island, with temperatures expected to reach 92 degrees and a heat index as high as 103 degrees. The National Weather Service has also issued a flood watch for the afternoon into late tonight, as showers and thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain. Some areas could receive 1 to 2 inches of rain in an hour, leading to localized flash flooding, especially in urban centers.

Stay Safe and Informed

Residents in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions. In Rhode Island, the National Weather Service advises drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, and checking on relatives and neighbors to avoid heat illnesses.

The good news? Precipitation chances lower significantly on Friday and over the weekend, with just an isolated shower possible. It looks like another great weekend to be outdoors!
