Oklahoma Lawyer Wins Top Award! Why Everyone's Talking About It

Robert Don Gifford, a Cherokee Nation citizen and accomplished lawyer, has been awarded the prestigious Clarence Darrow Award by the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association (OCDLA). This award recognizes an Oklahoma attorney who embodies the passionate and dedicated criminal defense advocacy exemplified by Clarence Darrow himself.

A Champion for Justice

Gifford's recognition stems from his remarkable achievements, including securing a Presidential Commutation for Native American activist Leonard Peltier. He also boasts an impressive record of consecutive acquittals in federal court, a feat made even more notable considering that only about 4% of federal criminal jury trials result in a "not guilty" verdict. Gifford's commitment extends beyond the courtroom, demonstrated through his pro bono work, writings, and public speaking engagements.

Beyond the Courtroom: A Leader in Civil Rights

Gifford's dedication to justice is further evidenced by his election to the Board of Directors for the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and his selection as an Oklahoma representative to the United States Commission for Civil Rights. He also serves as the current Chair of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Military and Veteran’s Law Section and is a trustee to the Oklahoma County Law Library.

A retired Colonel from the U.S. Army, Gifford has been previously honored by the Cherokee Nation with the Medal of Patriotism for his 23 years of active and reserve military service and continued service to servicemembers, veterans, and their families.

Serving Native American Communities

Gifford's commitment extends to serving Native American communities. He serves as a Supreme Court Justice for the Supreme Courts for the Comanche Nation, Sac and Fox Tribe of Oklahoma and the Pawnee Nation. Gifford also serves as the chief trial judge for the Kaw Nation District Court and the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, and is an associate tribal court judge for the Seminole Nation, the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe, and the Miami Tribe.

Gifford, a former Lawton resident and Fort Sill JAG officer, founded Gifford Law in Oklahoma City. His statewide practice focuses on civil rights and criminal defense, reflecting his unwavering dedication to upholding justice for all.
