A massive four-alarm fire ripped through a commercial warehouse near the Oakland Coliseum Friday afternoon, sending plumes of smoke billowing across the East Oakland neighborhood. The Oakland Fire Department (OFD) responded to the blaze at approximately 4:55 p.m. in the 5200 block of East 8th Street, quickly escalating the response due to the fire's intensity.
According to OFD Battalion Chief Porya Jeddi, firefighters arrived to find the entire warehouse already engulfed in flames, an unusual situation for a building of that size. Firefighters immediately adopted defensive tactics to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures, including commercial and residential buildings, as well as vehicles parked on the street.
"This easily could have been a two or three-block radius fire had the crews not acted so quickly to get it under control," said OFD Fire Chief Damon Covington, highlighting the swift and effective response of the firefighters.
Possible Marijuana Grow Operation Investigated
Adding another layer to the story, authorities are investigating the possibility of a marijuana grow operation inside the warehouse. An Oakland Police Department officer on the scene reportedly spoke with an individual who emerged from the burning building and indicated the presence of the operation. While the legality of the operation and its potential connection to the fire remain unconfirmed, it is a key aspect of the ongoing investigation.
"It appeared that the female that was outside with OPD was inside, and they noted that the grow operation caused the fire," said Jeddi, emphasizing that these were initial reports and yet to be confirmed.
Fire Spreads, No Injuries Reported
The fire, located near railroad tracks, spread to an adjacent building and ignited at least three recreational vehicles parked in front of the warehouse. Despite the intensity of the blaze and its proximity to other structures, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee confirmed that no injuries were reported.
The fire was registered to a company called H&Q Furniture LLC. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and determine the full extent of the impact.
Ongoing Investigation
The Oakland Fire Department is continuing its investigation into the cause of the fire, including exploring the potential link to the suspected marijuana grow operation. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
