Six Flags Great America Closing in 2027: What You Need to Know
Six Flags is closing its Great America theme park in Santa Clara, California, at the end of the 2027 season. This announcement follows the recent news of another Six Flags location closing in Maryland, leaving fans wondering about the future of the amusement park giant.
The decision was revealed during a recent investors' meeting, with Six Flags Chief Financial Officer Brian Witherow stating that Great America, along with Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, ranked "very low on the ranking of margins."
Great America, originally named Marriott's Great Adventure, opened its doors nearly 50 years ago in 1976. Over the years, it has been under various ownerships, including Paramount and Cedar Fair, which merged with Six Flags in 2024.
The Land Deal: A Sign of Things to Come?
The land on which Great America sits has a complex history. Originally built on public land, Cedar Fair purchased the site in 2019 and later sold it to real estate firm Prologis in 2022 for $310 million. The agreement allowed Six Flags to operate the park until the lease ended in June 2028, with a potential five-year extension. However, Cedar Fair announced its intention to close the park at the end of the lease at the time of the sale.
Prologis has yet to announce plans for the site after Great America closes. This leaves the future of the prime real estate location uncertain. The park shares a parking lot with the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi's Stadium.
What Does This Mean for Theme Park Enthusiasts?
With Great America set to close, fans of the park have a limited time to experience its rides and attractions. The closure marks the end of an era for the Northern California amusement park scene. Now is the time to plan your visit before it's too late!
