Devils Nab Bordeleau! What Does This Trade Mean for the Team?

The New Jersey Devils have acquired forward Thomas Bordeleau from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Shane Bowers, the team announced Wednesday. Bordeleau, a restricted free agent recently extended a qualifying offer by San Jose, brings a promising skillset to the Devils lineup.

Bordeleau's Background

Thomas Bordeleau, 23, has spent the last four seasons with the San Jose organization, playing at both the AHL and NHL levels. In 161 AHL games, he tallied 107 points (47 goals, 60 assists). During the 2024-25 season, Bordeleau's 38 points (14 goals, 24 assists) ranked sixth on San Jose's AHL affiliate, and his 24 assists were a career-high.

The 5'10", 180 lbs. forward made his NHL debut with the Sharks on April 17, 2022, against Minnesota. He has played in 44 career NHL games, recording 6 goals, 12 assists, and 18 points.

College Career

Before turning professional, Bordeleau excelled at the University of Michigan in the NCAA. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2020-21, leading all freshmen nationally in scoring with 30 points (8 goals, 22 assists) in 24 games. He also earned the Tim Taylor Award as the NCAA’s top rookie.

What to Expect

While Bowers heads to San Jose, the Devils gain a player with potential who has shown promise in the AHL and a glimpse of NHL talent. Bordeleau was originally drafted by San Jose in the second round, 38th overall, in the 2020 NHL Draft. Bowers, a former first-round pick, spent the majority of the 2024-25 season with AHL Utica, recording 3 goals and 17 points in 65 games. He has yet to record a point in 13 career NHL games.

The Devils will be hoping that Bordeleau can translate his AHL success to the NHL level and contribute to their offensive depth.
