Lakers' Center Search: Lopez, Capela, or a Surprise Move?!

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly making a strong push to address their need for a dominant center in the upcoming free agency period. With Dorian Finney-Smith expected to depart for the Houston Rockets, the Lakers are looking to fill the void with a top-tier player to complement Luka Dončić's skillset. General Manager Rob Pelinka has publicly stated the team's commitment to improving their interior presence and has been actively exploring all available options.

Lakers Eyeing Brook Lopez and Clint Capela

According to sources, the Lakers are heavily interested in Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez and Atlanta Hawks' Clint Capela. Lopez, a proven rim protector and three-point shooter, would provide valuable experience and versatility to the Lakers' frontcourt. Capela, known for his rebounding and athleticism, would offer a different dynamic as a lob threat and defensive presence.

A Surprise Contender: Deandre Ayton?

In addition to Lopez and Capela, the Lakers are also reportedly considering Portland Trail Blazers center Deandre Ayton as a potential target. Ayton, a former No. 1 overall pick, possesses tremendous upside but has yet to fully realize his potential. A change of scenery could be beneficial for both Ayton and the Lakers.

The Lakers have the $14.1 million mid-level exception at their disposal, giving them some financial flexibility to pursue their desired targets. However, they will face competition from other teams also in need of a center. The free agent market for centers is considered relatively thin this year, making the Lakers' pursuit even more critical.

Trade Possibilities: Nick Richards?

With the Phoenix Suns acquiring two centers during the 2025 NBA Draft, Nick Richards has emerged as a trade target. The Lakers are actively trying to "turn over every stone" in the hunt for a center to add depth and talent to the roster. The Lakers are motivated to create a strong roster to pair with Dončić to contend for a championship.
