Sam Burns Leads U.S. Open at Oakmont After Stunning Round

Sam Burns delivered a spectacular performance at Oakmont Country Club on Friday, shooting a remarkable 65 to take the lead at the 2025 U.S. Open. His impressive round propelled him to 3-under par, giving him a one-stroke advantage over J.J. Spaun, who led after the first round. Viktor Hovland is the only other player under par, sitting at 1-under.

Burns Tames Tough Oakmont Course

Oakmont proved to be a formidable challenge for many of the world's top golfers. Several prominent names struggled to navigate the demanding course conditions. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finds himself at 4-over par, seven strokes behind Burns. Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion who came close to winning last year's U.S. Open, narrowly made the cut. Bryson DeChambeau, the 2024 U.S. Open champion, didn't make the cut at all.

Weather Interruption

Heavy downpours late in the day forced play to be suspended around 8:15 p.m. ET. A few golfers, including Thriston Lawrence, were still on the course with only a few holes remaining. Lawrence, currently at 1-over with a short par putt left, will need to return early Saturday to complete his round. The USGA anticipates resuming the second round early Saturday morning to ensure all players finish.

  • Sam Burns: Leading at 3-under par.
  • J.J. Spaun: One stroke behind Burns.
  • Viktor Hovland: Only other player under par.
  • Scottie Scheffler: Struggling at 4-over par.

The stage is set for an exciting weekend at Oakmont as Burns looks to maintain his lead and secure his first U.S. Open title. Golf fans are eager to see if McIlroy and Scheffler can regain their form to challenge the leaderboard.
