Former WWE Superstar and current AEW star MVP has voiced his displeasure with Brock Lesnar's infamous WWE Championship win over Kofi Kingston in 2019. The quick victory, which saw Lesnar defeat Kingston in a mere seven seconds on the SmackDown premiere on Fox, effectively ended Kingston's WWE Championship reign, which began at WrestleMania 35.
MVP's Critique of the Kingston/Lesnar Match
Speaking on the Markin' Out podcast, MVP didn't hold back his feelings about the match. "I thought that was just stupid killing Kofi off," he said. "I don't know, I could be completely wrong, I feel there was some measure of disingenuousness with that. I can't say exactly why. I thought there was no need to do that to Kofi. I thought that was ridiculous. A lot of people felt that way."
MVP's comments echo the sentiments of many fans who felt Kingston's hard-earned championship run was cut short abruptly and unceremoniously. Kingston, who had been with WWE for over a decade, finally captured the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 after a long and arduous journey. His victory was seen as a major accomplishment and a testament to his dedication and talent.
No Rematch for Kofi
Adding insult to injury, Kingston never received a rematch against Lesnar for the title. It wasn't until Money In The Bank 2021 that Kingston would get another shot at the WWE Championship, unsuccessfully challenging Bobby Lashley.
Currently, Kofi Kingston is one-half of the WWE World Tag Team Champions alongside Xavier Woods. MVP manages Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin, the reigning AEW Tag Team Champions.
