Andrew McCutchen Passes Roberto Clemente in Pirates Home Run History

Pittsburgh Pirates' designated hitter Andrew McCutchen etched his name further into franchise history on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, surpassing the legendary Roberto Clemente for third place on the Pirates' all-time home run list. McCutchen's three-run blast against the Miami Marlins at PNC Park was his 241st as a Pirate, moving him ahead of Clemente and behind only Ralph Kiner (301) and Willie Stargell (475).

The momentous home run came in the fifth inning with the Pirates already leading 1-0. Ke'Bryan Hayes singled, followed by a walk from Oneil Cruz, setting the stage for McCutchen. He connected with a 1-1 splitter from Marlins right-hander Cal Quantrill, sending the ball 405 feet into the left-center field stands. The crowd erupted, and McCutchen was deservedly coaxed out for a curtain call.

"It's an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Roberto Clemente," McCutchen said after the game. "He's a legend, not just in Pittsburgh, but across the baseball world. To pass him on this list is something I'll never forget."

The Pirates went on to win the game 5-2, securing a series victory over the Marlins. Bailey Falter pitched well, allowing only one run in 5 1/3 innings, and David Bednar closed the door with a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save.

Beyond the on-field heroics, the Pirates are fortunate to have Father Bill Schwartz, affectionately known as the Pirates Padre, as their volunteer chaplain. For nearly 20 years, Father Bill has been a fixture at PNC Park, offering blessings and support to players, staff, and fans alike. His pre-game Masses and unwavering presence create a unique and positive atmosphere within the ballpark.
