Sarah Jessica Parker, star of 'And Just Like That...', recently expressed surprise at the negative reception of Sara Ramírez's character, Che Diaz. In an interview, Parker revealed she was unaware of the extent of the backlash until a friend brought it to her attention.
Parker's Reaction to the Che Diaz Controversy
“A friend of mine brought it up to me, and it’s like: ‘What are you talking about?’” Parker stated, expressing her bewilderment. She added that she generally avoids paying attention to external commentary, explaining, “I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and I’ve almost never paid attention to peripheral chatter.”
Parker also emphasized her positive experience working with Ramírez, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, like their character Che Diaz. “I loved working with them,” she said.
Che Diaz's Role and Departure
Ramírez played Che Diaz, a non-binary comedian and love interest for Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), in the first two seasons of the 'Sex and the City' spinoff. The character quickly became a subject of controversy among viewers, sparking debates and memes online.
After season 2, Ramírez exited the show. Reflecting on the criticism, Ramírez stated, “I am not the fictional characters I have played, nor am I responsible for the things that are written for them to say...And we are living in a world that has become increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary, or disrupt the mainstream.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the controversy surrounding Che Diaz, 'And Just Like That...' continues to evolve. Parker's comments highlight the complex relationship between actors, characters, and audience reception in the age of social media. The series is set to return for a third season, promising more stories and conversations.
