Florida A&M University's (FAMU) Vice President and Director of Athletics, Angela Suggs, has been arrested on multiple felony charges, including grand theft and scheme to defraud. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) conducted an investigation that led to her arrest on Monday.
Details of the Allegations
Suggs is accused of misusing a business credit card from her previous role as President and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation (FSF). According to the FDLE, she allegedly racked up over $24,000 in personal expenses, including visits to casinos, and then falsified travel vouchers to cover up the unauthorized charges.
The investigation began in November 2024 after the Florida Department of Commerce’s Inspector General flagged suspicious activity related to Suggs' FSF business credit card purchases and travel reimbursements. The FDLE found that Suggs allegedly coded personal expenses as business meals on her travel vouchers. When confronted, she claimed some charges were accidental or for business-related meals.
FAMU's Response
FAMU Interim President Dr. Timothy Beard issued a statement acknowledging the allegations. He stated that the university is aware of the situation and is monitoring it closely. He emphasized that the alleged misconduct occurred during Suggs' tenure with a previous employer and is not related to her current duties at FAMU. However, the university will respond appropriately as the situation unfolds.
- Suggs began her role at FAMU on October 7, 2024.
- Prior to FAMU, she was the President and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation.
- She has also held leadership positions at FAMU in the past.
Suggs turned herself in to authorities at the Leon County Detention Facility and was later released on a $13,500 bond. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the legal process proceeds.
