Chelsea Football Club has officially announced the signing of Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg. The highly-rated center-back has inked an impressive eight-year deal, committing his future to the Blues until 2033. This move, finalized on June 9, 2025, marks a significant addition to Chelsea's defensive ranks.
Sarr Joins Chelsea After Agreement with Strasbourg
The agreement between Chelsea and Strasbourg, valued at €14 million (£11.9m; $14.4m), was initially reached in January. Sarr's arrival is perfectly timed, as he is now eligible to be included in Enzo Maresca’s squad for the upcoming Club World Cup.
Notably, both Chelsea and Strasbourg are part of the BlueCo multi-club ownership group, facilitating the smooth transfer of the promising young defender.
A Rising Star in Defense
The 19-year-old France Under-20 international made 28 first-team appearances for Strasbourg in the 2024-25 season, contributing to their qualification for the Conference League with a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1. Prior to Strasbourg, Sarr honed his skills at the Lens youth academy for six years and spent another six seasons at Lyon. He also gained valuable experience during a loan spell with Belgian side Daring Brussels (formerly RWD Molenbeek) in the 2023-24 campaign.
Chelsea's Plans for Sarr
Chelsea are eager to integrate Sarr into the first team as quickly as possible. He is expected to join the senior squad traveling to the USA for the FIFA World Cup, providing him with an excellent opportunity to adapt to Enzo Maresca’s tactical approach and build relationships with his new teammates.
While acknowledging that more experienced centre-backs currently occupy higher positions in the squad hierarchy, Chelsea believes in Sarr's potential and is committed to his development. The club views this acquisition as a strategic move for the future, even if a loan back to Strasbourg was considered. His relatively inexperience will benefit from the senior players. The long-term contract signifies the club’s faith in his ability to adapt to the demands of English football and become a key player for Chelsea in the years to come.
