Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco's legal troubles continue to mount as a trial proceeds in the Dominican Republic regarding allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Simultaneously, a new charge has been filed against him related to an alleged gun incident.
Teen Girl Testifies in Sexual Abuse Trial
On Thursday, a teenage girl testified behind closed doors in Franco's trial in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The trial centers around charges of sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. The alleged victim was reportedly 14 years old at the time of the alleged incidents.
Prosecutors have presented audio and video evidence related to the girl, though details of this evidence remain private. Franco's attorneys have argued that the prosecution's evidence has been manipulated.
The press was largely excluded from the courtroom during Thursday's proceedings. Franco, 24, faces a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison if convicted. He is currently on Major League Baseball's restricted list.
New Gun Charge Filed
Adding to Franco's legal challenges, prosecutors have filed a formal charge of illegal possession of a firearm. This charge stems from a November incident in San Juan de la Maguana, where Franco was allegedly involved in an altercation in an apartment building parking lot.
Reports indicate that the incident involved a dispute over a woman. A Glock firearm with a magazine and 15 rounds of ammunition was reportedly found in Franco's vehicle. Franco allegedly lacked documentation for the firearm, which was registered to another individual whom Franco identified as his uncle.
Punishments for illegal firearm possession in the Dominican Republic can range from three to five years in prison, along with fines and confiscation of the weapon.
It's crucial to note that the gun charge is separate from the ongoing sexual abuse trial. Franco remains on MLB's restricted list while the legal proceedings unfold. The trial is expected to continue.
