Panthers Lock Down Mikkola! 8-Year Deal Shocks NHL!

Niko Mikkola Stays in Sunrise: Lands Massive 8-Year Extension!

Florida Panthers fans, rejoice! Defenseman Niko Mikkola has signed an eight-year contract extension with the team, solidifying his future in South Florida. The deal, worth a reported $40 million, will keep the two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Panthers through the 2033-34 season, beginning in 2026-27.

Mikkola, 29, has become a crucial part of the Panthers' defensive core since joining the team in 2023. Last season, he posted career highs in goals (6), assists (16), points (22), plus/minus (+12), shots on goal (116), and ice time per game (20:12). He also led the Panthers in hits (137) and finished second in blocked shots (88).

"Niko has proven himself to be a dependable defenseman who uses his speed and physicality to impact both ends of the ice," said Panthers General Manager Bill Zito. "He was an indispensable piece of our past two championship campaigns, and we are thrilled that Niko will be continuing his career with the Florida Panthers."

Before joining the Panthers, Mikkola played for the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. He was originally drafted by the Blues in the fifth round (No. 127) of the 2015 NHL Draft. He was traded to the New York Rangers during the 2022-23 season and then signed with the Panthers as a free agent.

This long-term commitment to Mikkola demonstrates the Panthers' belief in his abilities and his importance to the team's continued success. With Mikkola locked in, the Panthers' defense looks strong for years to come.
