Ryder Cup TIE! Cantlay Clutch, McIlroy Misses! What a Day!

Day 1 of the 2025 Ryder Cup is delivering intense competition! All eyes are on Bethpage Black as the United States and Europe battle for crucial points.

Cantlay's Birdie Changes the Game

Patrick Cantlay delivered a clutch performance on No. 13, sinking a 12-foot birdie putt. This crucial shot, coupled with a missed 6-foot putt by Rory McIlroy, resulted in a tied match. This swing is significant for the Americans, who are striving to gain momentum in the afternoon session.

Ryder Cup Format Explained

Unlike standard PGA Tour tournaments, the Ryder Cup pits two teams of 12 players from the United States and Europe against each other in 28 matches over three days. The first two days feature eight two-person team matches – four in the morning and four in the afternoon. The final day consists of 12 singles matches.

Team captains, Keegan Bradley for the U.S. and Luke Donald for Europe, decide the roster selections and order of play for each session.

Match-Play Formats: Foursomes and Four-Ball

Ryder Cup team matches utilize two formats: four-ball (best ball) and foursomes (alternate shot). At Bethpage Black, foursomes are played in the morning, followed by four-ball in the afternoon. In foursomes, partners alternate hitting the same ball until it's holed, also alternating who tees off on each hole.

High Stakes on the Back Nine

The Americans are feeling the pressure. Securing a win against McIlroy would be a massive boost. The tension is palpable with only a few holes remaining, but Cantlay and the Americans are showing strength on the back nine. The first match is all but over for the Europeans, but Fleetwood-Rose are only slightly ahead of Griffin-DeChambeau.
